Cabin Brewing

It’s time to catch up with some of the Alberta Beer Award Winners and find out how they’ve been doing over the last few months. Let’s start with Jonas Hurtig from Cabin Brewing!

Congratulations on winning six awards at the 2020 Alberta Beer Awards, what a fantastic accomplishment! You took home Gold for Brewery of the Year, two more Golds for your Sunshine Rain IPA & Super Duper Saturation, 2 Silvers for your Chapter 1 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Wee Heavy & Retrospectrum Pale Ale, and last but not least a Bronze for Best in Show for the Sunshine Rain IPA!

How excited did you feel when you heard Cabin’s name announced six times?

We were all extremely excited to hear our name come up. We all look forward to these awards every year and having been part of the judging process for the last few years, I can say that the competition is one of the best run that I’ve ever seen. I was especially excited to see Sunshine Rain win gold in IPA. It’s a very competitive category with so many great IPAs in Alberta, so to have it judged first place by a panel of experts was very rewarding.

How is Cabin handling this difficult time?

We’ve changed our business model slightly to account for the loss of on-premise sales, and have switched to packaging 100% of our beer into cans. We’re still trying to put out new beers every few weeks, as well as keep up with the production of our three core beers. It turns out that it’s quite the challenge right now!

We offer a home delivery service where customers can order from our webstore before 8 pm for next day home delivery ( Our taproom is also open for off-sales and curbside pickup. Our hours are M-F 10am-6pm, Sat 12pm-6pm and Sun 12pm to 5pm. You can either call our taproom at 403-244-3331 to arrange pickup or order through the website and specify pickup instead of delivery.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

We want to thank everyone for the massive support we’ve received, and we have some really exciting new stuff coming down the pipeline!

We’re also looking at reopening the taproom for onsite consumption before the end of June!

What is one fun fact about Cabin Brewing that people might not know?

The three owners (Darrin, Haydon & Jonas) all used to be homebrewers and met through Calgary’s homebrew club, the Cowtown Yeast Wranglers.
